Safety Bulletins
A new type of stair assembly called the “I”- Stairs is being used new residential construction.
This system uses a 2” x 4” board on its edge, and the steps and risers are ¾ inch OSB. These are connected using a metal plate, similar to that of a gusset plate found on manufactured trusses. The triangles holding the steps are light-weight steel, and attached to the 2” x 4”s by glue and nails.
This system is approved for use in single-family houses, townhouses, and inside the residential portion of condominiums/ apartments with a two or multi-story concept. Currently, these will not be found in common areas of condominiums/ apartments due to their lower load rating.
According to the manufacturer, the stairs going from a main floor to the upstairs should be protected with drywall. However, in an unfinished area, such as from the basement to the main floor, drywall is not required.
Currently, there is no requirement to protect these stairs with drywall.
